The article investigates Karl Barth\u2019s wrestling (in 1923) with Martin Luther\u2019s many writings on this important and complicated topic. Barth is torn between admiration and shock. Is Luther\u2019s understanding a convincing witness to faith and trust in revelation \u2013 or is it an expression of an almost \u00bbdemonic vitality\u00ab?
