There is hardly a topic of theological dogmatics that has evoked such remarkable formulations and formulae as the topic “the Bible and the authority of scripture.” The notion of a “scriptural principle,” formulae such as sola scriptura, “scripture’s self-interpretation,” the “infallibility of scripture,” the “external and internal clarity of scripture,” as well as expressions such as “biblical theology” or “the Bible is true” belong to the singular defense arsenal that is supposed to ensure the authority of scripture. I shall call these expressions “authority formulae.” These formulae and formulations are remarkable because on the one hand they appear short and clear, but on the other hand \u2013 at any rate unless they are accompanied by significant interpretation and qualification \u2013 they give rise to a wide variety of objections and false orientations. They rightly run repeatedly into opposition and protest.<\/p>\n

Wie kaum ein anderes Thema der theologischen Dogmatik hat das Thema \u201cBibel und Autorit\u00e4t der Schrift\u201d merkw\u00fcrdige Formulierungen und Formeln hervorgebracht. Die Rede vom \u201cSchriftprinzip\u201d und Formeln wie das \u201csola scriptura\u201d, die \u201cSelbstauslegung der Schrift\u201d, die \u201cUnfehlbarkeit der Schrift\u201d, die \u201c\u00e4u\u00dfere und innere Klarheit der Schrift\u201d, aber auch Wendungen wie \u201cdie biblische Theologie\u201d oder \u201cthe Bible is true\u201d geh\u00f6ren zu dem eigenartigen Arsenal der Verteidigung, mit dem die Autorit\u00e4t der Schrift gesichert werden soll. Merkw\u00fcrdig sind diese Formulierungen und Formeln, weil sie einerseits kurz und klar erscheinen, andererseits aber \u2013 jedenfalls ohne erhebliche Interpretation und Qualifikation \u2013 vielfach Ansto\u00df erregen und zu Fehlorientierungen gef\u00fchrt haben. Mit Recht sto\u00dfen diese Wendungen, die man \u201eAutorit\u00e4tsformeln\u201c nennen kann, immer erneut auf Widerspruch und Protest.<\/p>\n
